We always get inquiries about the cost of doing up a dessert table. And it’s not always cheap. Really. It’s not.
I’m one for simple is elegant. And with how many littles I have, cost is everything. With the right materials and a great photographer, you can make a simply sweet holiday setup with the stuff you already have at home.
Here is an example of St. Patrick’s day setup on a $20 budget.
Backdrop: The backdrop was done with an extra piece of plywood board that I had in my garage. Then wrapped it up in gold wrapping paper leftover from Christmas. You can use any type of wrapping paper, fabric, etc to do up a simple yet elegant backdrop of any kind to match your theme.
For the hanging pieces, I got from the dollar section from Target. The shamrock ($3) and the lucky sign ($3) had a dimension to it that I thought would be great to place treats on. And it worked! The last piece of 2×4, was the final piece that I thought, hey, let’s put that to use. So I had left over spray paint (minty green to go with the St. Patrick’s Theme) and sprayed painted it to match.
The burlap banner (Target dollar section – $3) I cut in half for the top part of the backdrop then add the other piece to the crate below.
Screws I used to hold it up together was $3 and change.
Treats: The treats were SUPER easy. Only because all of the materials for that was at home with the exception of the candy.
The giant cupcake was made out of the Pillsbury fun fetti cake mix (used 2 boxes) and the frosting was done in Whipped frosting by Pillsbury. Colored the bottom frosting obviously with green liquid food dye to give it that rich green bottom. Top of the giant cupcake was done from scratch of shortening, powdered sugar, Vanilla and hot water. And that’s it. To get that rosette look, I used Wilton 1M tip.
The miniature jello shots, I had some extra shot glasses (don’t ask!), and made lime green jello ($0.74).
Candy: The little cork bottles (bought at Target dollar section again – $4) with the M&Ms in them was unopened leftover candy packages from Valentine’s we separated. The lollipop suckers were $0.10 a piece. And the candy kabobs was done by candy stash we carry in home. Really, my home is the hidden Willy Wonka Candy factory. The gold chocolate coins were 15 for $1.
Decor: Balloons was from my stash and the blow up cost was $1.50 to fill them up with helium. The super large shamrock up against the Plywood is left over from last year’s decor I got from the Dollar tree. And the crate was from Kristen’s photography studio.
The total set up cost $19.70. Not too shabby don’t you say.
